Spiritual Edification

Soulful Healing Image

In the Bible, the word ‘edification’ means to  ‘build up‘. Spiritual edification‘ means to build up the church’s or a person’s knowledge and faith concerning the Kingdom of God:

And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ(Ephesians 4:11-13)

Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another. (Romans 14:19)

Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel. (I Corinthians 14:12)

Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. (I Corinthians 14:26)

The Bible also exhorts us not to do the opposite, that is, tear down someone’s faith:

Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. (Ephesians 4:29)

All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify. (I Corinthians 10:23)
