Go Light the World

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. (1Peter 2:9 (NKJV)

Jesus is the light of this world (John 8:12), but in His absence, we have been given the responsibility to reflect and transmit that light into the darkness of the world.

You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)

The concept of light representing what is good and darkness representing what is evil permeates the Bible from beginning to end:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light“; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good. (Genesis 1:1-4)

The book of John begins similarly:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. (John 1:1-4)

And Revelation ends with Jesus once again being the light of the world:

The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. (Revelation 21:23-24)

There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever. (Revelation 22:5)

But now, In this world, many choose darkness over light – the world over Jesus

And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God. (John 3:19-21)

Light enables us to see — without light we cannot see anything — we are literally in the dark

Open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God. (Acts 26:18)

Satan wants to keep us in the dark by hiding, distorting or otherwise disguising the truth — however, the Light of Christ reveals the truth which the darkness attempts to conceal

And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. All things that are exposed are made manifest by the light. (Ephesians 5:11-13)

But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. (2Corinthians 4:2-4)

Light is the key to life in the natural world — it is the catalyst for all organic growth. So too is light the key to eternal life in the spiritual realm:

For the LORD God is a sun…. The LORD will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly, (Psalm 84:11)

He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life. (John 8:12b)

Without the sun’s warmth, our world would grow cold and eventually die. In the spiritual realm, light is hot and dark is cold.

I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. (Revelation 3:15-16)

And becauselawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. (Matthew 24:12)
